Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus)
Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a robust, air-bladder-studded brown seaweed that has been prized along Ireland's Atlantic coastline for centuries. Hand-harvested from the wild, rocky shores of Ireland's west coast, it's one of nature's most mineral-dense superfoods and a staple of traditional coastal wellness.
With a deep, earthy, and pleasantly briny flavour, Bladderwrack is best used as a culinary seasoning or wellness supplement rather than a standalone ingredient. Add it to stocks, broths, and slow-cooked soups to impart a rich oceanic depth, or steep it as a herbal tea. It can also be ground into a powder and stirred into smoothies, dressings, or sprinkled over grains and vegetables.
Bladderwrack is one of the most nutrient-rich seaweeds in the Atlantic:
- Outstanding natural source of iodine to support healthy thyroid function
- Rich in fucoidan, a unique marine compound with powerful antioxidant properties
- Contains alginic acid, potassium, calcium, and magnesium
- A natural source of vitamins A, C, E, and B vitamins
Preparation: Rinse well and soak in cold water for 10–15 minutes to soften. Add whole pieces to broths and remove before serving, or grind dried flakes into a seasoning powder. For a wellness tea, steep a small piece in hot (not boiling) water for 5–10 minutes.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, keep in an airtight container and use within 4–6 weeks for optimum potency and flavour.
